Religions of the World

The participants will engage their  hearts and  minds  in reviewing the major religious faiths of the world, learning what it is that creates deep love in the hearts of the adherents across space and time and recognising the essential oneness of humanity and the human condition.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The participants will:

  • Recognize the symbols of the major religions of the world, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Bahá’i, Religions of Japan, and some Indigenous sacred traditions.
  • Recognize the places of worship and Holy places connected to the religions
  • Identify the Founder of each of the major Faiths, and the history of its origins
  • Examine the state of the society before and after the influence of the Founder
  • State the name of each Faith’s Holy Book
  • Locate the places in the world where followers of that religion reside
  • Identify the main spiritual principles stated by each Founder
  • Locate selected passages from the Sacred Writings of each religion that identify the main principles of that religion.
  • Locate and study passages in the Holy Books that refer to the other religions.
  • Study the Sacred Writings of each of the religions and compare the Teachings of each Faith relating to topics of interest to the participants such as:
  1. The nature of the Supreme Being, the Creator, The Great Spirit, God
  2. The nature of the soul
  3. What is spirit?
  4. What it means to be human.
  5. The meaning of suffering, sacrifice, tests and difficulties
  6. Heaven and hell
  7. Social laws… marriage, divorce, cleanliness, food and drink, medicine, courtesy, hospitality, charity, death rituals, education, war and conflict, peace,  money and business, wealth and poverty, raising the next generation, the environment, prohibitions and punishments for violation of the social laws
  8. Spiritual laws…love, worship, compassion, forgiveness, kindness, generosity, justice, truth, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage,  courtesy, birth and death, work, service,  respect,  reciprocity, money and business, wealth and poverty, the environment, unity,
  9. Celebrations and Commemorations

This interactive course is presented by Sandra Rowden-Rich, B.Ed. (Uni of Tasmania) Grad Cert in TESOL (Edith Cowan Uni in WA) Master Facilitator in Virtues Project International, Facilitator of Laughter Yoga, and Course Instructor for The Ruhi Institute International.  Sandra has had a life-long passion for studying and appreciating the sacred traditions of the world and will share this passion with the participants in this introductory course.

Sandra has more than 40 years’ experience in classroom teaching in Tasmania, in early childhood, primary, secondary and adult areas, and 10 years’ experience in training institutes for the Virtues Project International, and the Ruhi Institute in Tasmania, in mainland Australia, Russia, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, and most recently in Thailand.

$2 to cover venue costs
